What's Included and Why It Works

The Stage 1+ Drivetrain Package for the Subaru STI 6-speed manual transmission combines three components that address the three main sources of imprecision in the factory shifting feel. The Cobb short throw shifter replaces the factory shift lever with a double-adjustable unit that provides a 15% or 35% reduction in throw length at the two adjustment positions the shift gates are shorter, the lever moves less far between each gate, and gear selection requires less arm movement. The front and rear shifter bushings replace the factory rubber bushings with tighter-tolerance units that eliminate the slop and vagueness in the shifter's lateral motion bushings that have degraded or that were never tight to begin with are a major contributor to the imprecise, rubbery feel that STI owners frequently want to address. The shift plate installs at the base of the shifter and provides the adjustable geometry that determines throw length, working together with the bushings to produce a shift action that is both shorter and more precise.

Shift Feel, Color Combination, and Installation

Every Cobb Drivetrain Package is defined by the specific color combination of its shift knob and, on Stage 2+ packages, its reverse lockout pull ring. The knob and lockout colors are the distinguishing factor between variants of the same package all other components (shift plate, bushings, and where applicable the short throw shifter) are identical across color variants. The shift knob choices include standard threaded knobs and weighted knobs; the weighted knob uses additional mass to reduce the perceived effort of shifting and provide a more settled feel during rapid gear changes. The specific color combination in this listing is called out clearly in the product title and the Details section select the combination that matches the interior color scheme of the build.

The RallySport Take

The Cobb Stage 1+ Drivetrain Package for the STI 6MT is the definitive short-shifter solution for one of the most driver-focused transmissions in the Subaru lineup. The STI's 6-speed manual is a strong, precise transmission that is let down by factory rubber bushings that allow too much lateral slop and factory throw length that is longer than it needs to be. The Cobb package addresses both simultaneously the short throw shifter reduces throw, the bushing kit eliminates slop, and the weighted knob (825g) settles the lever and reduces perceived shifting effort. The STI 6MT with the Cobb Stage 1+ Drivetrain Package installed shifts with noticeably more precision and satisfaction than stock.
