NexGen FMIC + CAN Flex Fuel: How the Systems Work Together

NexGen Stage 2 + CAN Flex Fuel combines the cooling and boost capability of the NexGen front mount intercooler system with the fuel composition flexibility of the CAN Flex Fuel sensor. The NexGen FMIC moves charge air cooling to the front bumper opening where ambient airflow keeps temperatures dramatically lower than the factory TMIC. The CAN Flex Fuel sensor measures the actual ethanol content of the fuel continuously and communicates that reading to the Accessport via the CAN bus the ECU map adjusts fueling, timing, and boost targets automatically based on what the sensor reads. On the NexGen Stage 2 hardware with E30 or higher ethanol content, the Stage 2+ CAN Flex Fuel OTS maps can target substantially higher boost and more aggressive ignition timing than the 93-octane Stage 2 configuration, because the combination of FMIC charge air cooling and ethanol's knock resistance properties allows the calibration to be significantly more aggressive.

Stage 2+ Flex Fuel OTS Maps and Dynamic Calibration on E30/E85

The Stage 2+ CAN Flex Fuel OTS maps are calibrated for the complete NexGen hardware configuration with flex fuel capability not adapted from Stage 2 gasoline maps, but independently developed calibrations that account for the FMIC's lower charge temperatures, the intake's improved airflow, the NexGen solenoid's boost control precision, and the ethanol sensor's dynamic input together. Running E30 through this system on the NexGen Stage 2 hardware produces meaningfully more power than the same hardware on 93 octane, and more than E30 on a TMIC-limited Stage 1 configuration the combination of front-mount intercooler cooling capacity and ethanol's knock resistance multiplies each other's benefits.

Why Choose Cobb Tuning

Cobb Tuning has been developing performance software and hardware for turbocharged enthusiast vehicles since 1999. Founded in Austin, Texas, Cobb built its reputation on the Accessport and expanded into a full catalog of hardware engineered to complement it. Every OTS map is developed in-house on real vehicles, and every hardware product is validated as part of a complete system not sourced and sold in isolation. That integrated approach is why Cobb produces consistent, reliable results across the builds we see every day.

The RallySport Take

The NexGen Stage 2 + CAN Flex Fuel package is the definitive Stage 2 purchase for 2015-2018 Subaru WRX STI owners who want the maximum performance available from the NexGen hardware and ethanol fuel. Every component is developed as part of an integrated system, and the Stage 2+ CAN Flex Fuel OTS maps are calibrated specifically for this complete hardware configuration. No other single purchase delivers this level of complete, system-engineered Stage 2 performance for this platform.
