What's Included and Why It Works

The Stage 1+ Drivetrain Package for the Subaru WRX 5-speed manual transmission addresses the factory shifter's main shortcomings: excessive throw length and bushing slop that together produce a shift action that feels longer and less precise than the transmission's mechanical accuracy warrants. The Cobb shift plate installs at the base of the shifter mechanism and provides a 15% or 35% reduction in throw length at its two adjustment positions, shortening the travel between gear gates without changing the transmission's internal synchronizer geometry. The front and rear bushing kit replaces the factory rubber bushings which degrade and compress over time with tighter-tolerance units that eliminate lateral slop in the shifter's range of motion. The result is a shift action that is both shorter and more direct, with the mechanical feel of the transmission communicating more clearly through the lever.

Shift Feel, Color Combination, and Installation

Every Cobb Drivetrain Package is defined by the specific color combination of its shift knob and, on Stage 2+ packages, its reverse lockout pull ring. The knob and lockout colors are the distinguishing factor between variants of the same package all other components (shift plate, bushings, and where applicable the short throw shifter) are identical across color variants. The shift knob choices include standard threaded knobs and weighted knobs; the weighted knob uses additional mass to reduce the perceived effort of shifting and provide a more settled feel during rapid gear changes. The specific color combination in this listing is called out clearly in the product title and the Details section select the combination that matches the interior color scheme of the build.

Why Choose Cobb Tuning

Cobb Tuning has been developing performance software and hardware for turbocharged enthusiast vehicles since 1999. Founded in Austin, Texas, Cobb built its reputation on the Accessport and expanded into a full catalog of hardware engineered to complement it. Every OTS map is developed in-house on real vehicles, and every hardware product is validated as part of a complete system not sourced and sold in isolation. That integrated approach is why Cobb produces consistent, reliable results across the builds we see every day.

The RallySport Take

The GD WRX 5MT is a fundamentally good transmission that benefits substantially from reduced throw and tighter bushing tolerances. The wide barrel shifter provides a different lever feel versus the standard shifter more hand contact area on the lever. The standard red knob completes the package with a quality knob in the correct color.
